History
At Cherry Tree Primary School, we provide all our children with a broad and balanced history curriculum, regardless of ethnic origin, gender, class, aptitude or disability. History topics are delivered through learning challenges linked with key texts as a focus and stimulus for learning. This approach provides opportunities for first hand experiences, thinking skills and cross-curricular links.
We believe a high-quality history education will help our children gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It will inspire our children’s curiosity to know more about the past. Through our teaching and learning, we encourage our children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement.
Within our school, we have a knowledge- rich curriculum to embed knowledge of the past. Within History topics, we aim to immerse pupils through engaging experiences such as topic days, educational visits and expert visitors. As children move up through to Key Stage 2, they are able to:
- Form links between previous topics they have learned about and create their own chronological timeline of History (Chronology).
- Using disciplinary knowledge, children can recognise changes that have occurred and recognise what stayed the same (Change and continuity).
- Make comparisons between events and periods of time (Similarities and differences).
- Look at historical sources, for example, diaries, paintings and artefacts and come up with their own ideas on what they tell us about how people lived in the past (historical interpretations).
- Children in our school enjoy History lessons. They enjoy learning more about the past and how it shaped life as we know it today.
